»The best ever live production of windsurfing.«
That’s what the PWA called it! Really all we did was take seven cameras, a couple of drones, a handful of GoPro cameras and a bunch of really talented people and produced the shit out of a great windsurfing event.
The PWA (Professional Windsurfers Association) is the governing body of professional windsurfing worldwide. On their World Tour, you find the world’s best professional windsurfers. When the tour came to Cold Hawaii on the northeast coast of Denmark, the organisers, Friends of Cold Hawaii, came to CPHLIVE for a seven-day production rundown covering the tournament, including extensive content creation and amplification of the event.
Working together with Friends of Cold Hawaii in Klitmøller we had three main challenges if we wanted to make a spectacular production and get the tournament and Cold Hawaii the buzz it deserved.
The technical challenges were capturing perfect pictures of the world class surfers on the beautiful danish seaside in nature’s most extreme conditions, where only weather-beaten fishermen normally thrive, was a big technical and practical challenge.
Educating our viewers was essential. We had on our hands an extreme sport still only growing in popularity and attracting new and dedicated fans expecting to be entertained. Educating our viewers was essential if we wanted to attract more and to keep them engaged throughout the competition.
Presenting Cold Hawaii in the best way through content. We had this huge event on the Danish shores which gave us a unique opportunity to present Cold Hawaii and Klitmøller to a lot of people who did not know about this both peaceful and exciting place.
The technical solution: We assembled a crew of our best cameramen and technicians and set up a fully functional studio in the Cold Hawaii backyard producing live for six days.
We streamed live from five cameras including live shots from GoPro cameras attached to surfers helmets and live overview shots from drones.
How we educated: In between the tournament activities CPHLIVE took our viewers around the essentials of windsurfing. We talked to professional surfers about their gear and to experts and referees who explained us about the essentials of windsurfing. We created automatized live score graphics
How we presented Cold Hawaii: With a lot of our staff of talented people already in Cold Hawaii, we wanted to make the most of this. We went full throttle! We shot and produced a 30-minute documentary where we showed the very special intimacy in and around the small fishing village of Klitmøller together with the world class surfing in Cold Hawaii.
36.000 people watched our Cold Hawaii-documentary, that aired on Danish National Television (DR).
20.000 unique viewers watched the live stream and stayed on for more than 45 minutes on average, which in total means more than 900.000 minutes of watched live stream.
49.306 was the number of times the stream was viewed after the tournament on Youtube.
From our live stream, we produced tons of video content for Cold Hawaii & Friends. The posts reached an average of 24.240 people, had 657 new likes, 108 comments and 46 shares.
2.214 unique danish viewers watched the live stream. In comparison with the number for the documentary on national television, it meant that the Surf Sport and Cold Hawaii became 16 times more exposed in Denmark than ever before.
But to be totally honest with you, we were most proud when Duncan Coombs – Head Judge of PWA, named our efforts the »the best coverage of windsurfing ever,« for the second year in a row.
